Meet Platforma-M, the latest Russian military technology to emerge amid tensions with NATO. It's essentially a remote-controlled miniature tank - armed with a machine gun and four rocket launchers.

Platforma-M will protect Kaliningrad's S-400 surface-to-air missiles, as well as laying smokescreens and carrying out recon tasks.

Kaliningrad is an exclave on the borders of Poland and Lithuania, where Russia recently placed Iskander nuclear-capable missiles.

Russian defence sources claim Platforma-M has the "ability to direct weapons, accompany and hit targets in automatic and semi-automatic modes" and that it is "equipped with electro-optical and radar reconnaissance".

Its optical and radio locators also allow it to operate at night without being unmasked.
