The SAATEG service contract (Deep Theatre Reconnaissance and Mapping System) will make state-of-the-art reconnaissance equipment available to the German military in Mali in a few months.

“Air reconnaissance is indispensable for our soldiers in theatre. Therefore, we did our utmost to create the contractual basis for the provision of these capabilities. And we achieved this within a few months,” said Armin Schmidt-Franke, Deputy Director General of the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), when the contract was signed in Koblenz on July 20.

The contract between BAAINBw and Airbus DS Airborne Solutions (ADAS) lays down the conditions for the provision of the unmanned aircraft system Heron 1 for the mission in Mali, and initially ensures air reconnaissance from November 2016 to February 2018. The contract volume is almost 90 million Euros.

ADAS will be responsible for the entire technical logistic support, in cooperation with the system manufacturer, Israel Aerospace Industries. The Bundeswehr will be responsible for flight operations and the evaluation of the aerial images.

Already since 2010, the Bundeswehr has been using Heron 1 in Afghanistan, with a comparable service contract with ADAS. To date, more than 27,000 flight hours for air reconnaissance have been logged, for the protection of the soldiers deployed there.
