The evaluation of the first of two reconnaissance drones being considered as possible new equipment for the Swiss Army have begun on Emmen airbase.

This unmanned aircraft is the Heron 1, produced by the Israeli manufacturer Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. (IAI). The evaluation, which will be flown from Emmen, is scheduled to continue until September 21, 2012.

No weapons are fitted to this aircraft.

The assessment flights of the Heron 1 will be carried out by a combined project team of specialists from the Swiss Air Force and armasuisse. The aircraft will fly over central Switzerland and the Jura region.

Representatives of the press will be able to discover the Heron 1 on September 20, 2012, during a press day that will be held on Emmen air base. Accreditation is required to attend the press day.
