U.S. Navy Having Problems with Knifefish UUV

(Source: Forecast International; issued Nov 16, 2016)

WASHINGTON --- The U.S. Navy is working to fix problems with its Knifefish unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV). This multi-million-dollar program aims to provide system ability to find and identify mines. General Dynamics Mission Systems and Bluefin Robotics are developing the Knifefish UUV.

A report from the Pentagon's inspector general is critical of the program. Budget cuts and management problems are compromised development, according to the report. The system may not be ready for the planned initial production between July and September of 2017.

The U.S. Navy is expected to spend $842.5 million on the Knifefish program when costs for research, development, testing, procurement, and operation are totaled.
